Das Buch ist schon 1999 erschienen. Um diese Zeit herum habe ich es auch gelesen. Und es beschäftigt mich immer noch. Es geht um Aids.

Aids muss ich nicht erklären, darüber sollte jeder Bescheid wissen. Anfang der 80er Jahre war das anders. Da wurde Aids noch totgeschwiegen. Es gab die Krankheit schon und man wusste, wie sie übertragen wird. Lange hielt sich hartnäckig die Meinung, Aids würden nur Homosexuelle bekommen. Als Minderheit wurden sie ausgegrenzt und gemieden.

Paul Monette selbst erzählt in Geliehene Zeit von seinem Leben. Sein Freund Roger Horwitz erkrankt an Aids. Zu dieser Zeit ist auch Paul schon infiziert. Beide kämpfen uns versuchen der Krankheit zu trotzen. Ihre Freunde werden weniger, sie werden gemieden.

Sehr offen und ehrlich erzählt Paul Monette über das Zusammenleben mit seinem Freund während dieser Krankheit. Über finanzielle Nöte, emotionales Chaos.

Paul beschreibt das Erleben von Aids sehr sachlich, nicht übertrieben oder gar ausschmückend. Und trotzdem ist es für mich eines der emotionalsten Bücher, die ich bisher gelesen habe.
